SS ~ Mapping ~ My Fire Escape Plan: Safe Ways Out from My Bedroom
GRADE: 4-8 / TIME: 1-2 Weeks
My Fire Escape Plan: Safe Ways Out from My Bedroom (9 pages)
In this engaging and meaningful two-part lesson, students become fire safety experts by designing a personalized fire escape plan from their own bedroom.
Part 1: At Home Students work with their families to discuss a set of thought-provoking fire safety questions. Using the planning sheet and graph paper provided, they design a layout of their home that includes doors, windows, two escape routes from their bedroom, and a safe outdoor meeting place. This phase encourages important home conversations and real-life safety planning.
Part 2: At School
Back in class, students create a good copy of their escape plan using the final graph template. They come together to discuss the same safety questions as a class, reflect on their plans, and add extra safety features or creative ideas after learning from their peers. Students also include a legend and compass on their final plans to clearly communicate their escape routes.
This resource includes:
Home planning sheet with fire safety discussion questions, graph paper, and a legend template for drafting ideas
Step-by-step instruction guide to support students in completing their final escape plan and legend on graph paper
Reflection questions to encourage critical thinking and meaningful class discussion
Peer and teacher assessment rubric for clear, structured evaluation
Perfect for Fire Prevention Week, real-world mapping skills, safety units, or real-life learning opportunities. A powerful blend of home connection, critical thinking, and classroom collaboration.
TIP: You may want to ask students how many floors they have in their home so that you can have that many copies of graph paper ready for them before you hand out the lesson. For a final copy, students could cut their plan and legend out and place them onto construction paper. They can then add a nice title and creative compass.
